Who we are
Building a More Inclusive Tanzania
The Tanzania League of the Blind (TLB) is the oldest and most established national membership organization representing persons with visual impairment in Tanzania.
From its beginnings as a small association of citizens with visual impairment, TLB has grown into a nationwide movement with members, branches, wings, and district and regional structures reaching communities across the country.
For decades, TLB has combined rights-based advocacy with practical programmes in education, assistive technology, vocational skills and economic empowerment. We also work to strengthen leadership and participation among our members at community and national levels.
Our story
From a Member Movement to a National Voice
TLB's story is closely connected to the development of the disability rights movement in Tanzania.
Over the years, the organization has helped bring issues affecting persons with visual impairment into national discussion, including inclusive education and the right of persons with visual impairment to vote independently.
Today, TLB continues to serve two important roles: a membership movement representing persons with visual impairment, and a development organization working with partners to create lasting change.
We bring together members, government institutions, development partners, the private sector and fellow disability organizations to advance the rights and full participation of persons with visual impairment.

Our members
Our Members Are at the Heart of TLB
TLB exists because of its members.
Our nationwide membership and branch structures provide a platform for persons with visual impairment to participate, share experiences, develop leadership and collectively advocate for change.
As TLB grows, we are working to strengthen branch participation, expand membership and provide more tangible benefits and opportunities to members throughout Tanzania. The 2026–2031 strategy specifically prioritizes branch vibrancy, membership growth, leadership development and stronger governance.

Looking Ahead: 2026–2031
TLB's Five-Year Strategic Plan provides a practical roadmap for the organization's next chapter.
It was developed through consultation with members, the National Executive Committee, Executive Council, wings, branch leaders and staff, reflecting both the priorities of the organization and the experiences of its members.
